"George Burton represents what many of Jazz’s most exciting figures hoped the genre would become: precarious, dynamic, revolutionary…unable to be contained..." - Daniel Palmer, Nextbop

Since his arrival in New York ten years ago, the young pianist/composer George Burton has been on the radar of everyone who keeps up with innovations in jazz. There's no doubt that George Burton is a rising star: his debut release, The Truth of What I Am > The Narcissistwas chosen as one of the top ten debut albums in the 2016 NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll, and hailed as "a fantastic statement of modern jazz" by Downbeat critic Chris Tart and “one of the most exciting debuts I have heard in years” (NextBop).

Burton and his band are on a roll - they kicked off 2017 playing at NYC Winter Jazzfest; spring found them at The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage; and in August they made their debut appearance at the pinnacle of US jazz - The Newport Jazz Festival. Meanwhile, the raves for the album continue to roll in: "....smart melodic postbop with strong elements of R&B and hip-hop ... The Truth [Of What I Am] bursts with promise." —Michael J. West, JazzTimes

"Burton speaks the language of Logan Richardson and Ambrose Akinmusire - modern harmonic choices and rhythms and rhythms with a strong influence of hip hop and r&b, the melody always at the center of the conversation..." - Free Fall Jazz

Burton's dazzling virtuosity and breathtakingly eclectic approach to music reflect his experience in every aspect of the spectrum of jazz; beginning with rigorous classical training, branching into his equally rigorous experience in the Philadelphia jazz scene, and earning him a place on the world stage with some of the most significant practitioners of bop, post-bop and beyond: Eddie Henderson, Jack Walrath, Terrell Stafford, J.D. Allen, Sean Jones, James Carter and the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. Burton’s playing and compositions blend, deconstruct, and rearrange these diverse influences into a style that JazzTimes calls “Straight-but-not-straight.” His debut CD, " The Truth of What I Am > Narcissist" brings all the dimensions of his experience together, with ten original compositions that are snapshots of jazz in motion. Produced by Grammy-winning bassist Derrick Hodge, the album captures the entire range of heady, dynamic performances that have made Burton's ensembles among the most powerful new groups on the New York jazz scene.
