Mattan Klein


Mattan Klein was born and raised in Jerusalem, Israel. He began his musical training at age 7, taking piano lessons, and soon after switched to flute. Originally classically trained, Mr. Klein was attracted to a wide variety of popular music genres, and toured Europe and North America with several folklore groups from age 13 onwards. At 15 Mr. Klein recognized his ultimate expressive tool - Jazz. He began to perform and compose with a Jerusalem based ensemble and at 16 won first prize at the Pizmon-Tichon composition competition in (presenting music set to lyrics by poet Nathan Alterman), an award which marked a beginning of a promising musical career.
Mattan Klein performs extensively on stages across North America, and is often touring the world as a leader and as a sideman. Past performances include Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC, New Jersey Performing Arts Center programs, Blues Alley in Washington DC, 92nd street Y in New York, Regatta-Bar in Boston, and The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Internationally Mattan was featured at the Tel Aviv International Jazz Festival, 2009, Ottawa International Writers Festival and the Muskoka Music Festival in Canada, The Festival of Jazz in Binyamina, Israel. He has played on stages in Brazil and across Europe, and led the Seeds of Sun Israeli world-Jazz ensemble on East Asian stages in Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines. His performance schedule also includes engagements with his own Mattan Klein Jazz/fusion quintet for Jazz societies across America (Blues Alley Jazz Society, The Tennessee Jazz and Blues Society, New Mexico Jazz Workshop), and with individual composers/collaborators such as Omer Klein, Pablo Vergara, Juancho Herrera and many more. Mattan has performed with Israeli pop icons such as Shlomo Gronich, Miki Gavrielov and Yoni Rechter. Mattan teaches at the prestigious Thelma Yelin High School for the Arts, alongside Israel's most praised Jazz icons and Jazz educators.
