John Lester

John is an award winning songwriter who has, throughout his career, had one foot in jazz and the other in rock. A native of California, John graduated from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo with degrees in music and business. After graduating, he moved north to San Francisco where his skills as a big band bassist landed him gigs with Concord Jazz artists Full, Faith, and Credit, as well as the SF Jazz Composers Orchestra featuring Matt Brubeck. As a songwriter, John was awarded the “Song of the Year Award” from The West Coast Songwriter’s Association on two occasions and the title track from his previous release, So Many Reasons, is the winner of the WCS International Songwriting Award for “Best Jazz Song”.

What jazz radio is saying about the new album, “Jazz?”
  - “On each track of his new album “Jazz?”, singer/bassist John Lester strikes me as someone who knows how to tell the story, allowing the listener to hear these old songs in compelling new ways. That's what jazz and good songs do best. So regarding that question mark in the title…the answer is yes!”  - Bob Rogers,
   - JazzWeek's Internet Station of the Year 2011  “I've reviewed literally hundreds of CDs over the past year and I can honestly say that “Jazz?” is one of the most compelling I've heard from the first note to the last.”  - Eric Cohen, WAER, Syracuse, NY
