Antoine Roney

Born Antoine Roney in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His grandfather, Roosevelt Sherman played guitar, tuba, trumpet and played in the Frankie Fairfax Band in the 1930s. Growing up surrounded by jazz music, Horace Silver, Art Blakey Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Willy Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, influenced him at an early age.

First professional gig was with Wallace Roney at age of 13. Attended the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School of Music- studied with alto saxophonist, the late great Jackie McLean and simultaneously touring with Donald Byrd and the 125th Street Band.

In 1984-86 Antoine worked with Jackie McLean’s sextet, Clifford Jordan’s big band and Big John Patton’s organ quartet allowing Roney to work in the historically known Harlem renaissance neighborhood.

In 1988-89 toured throughout Europe with Rashied Ali and recorded-Rashied Ali In France. Roney and Arthur Taylor’s (one of the most important jazz drummer of the 1950’s) -Taylor’s Wailers.

In 1991 as a leader recorded his debut album/CD the Traveler. Ravi Coltrane and Antoine Roney toured and recorded CD- Sax Storm and Grand Central and toured the US in 1992. In 1993 toured Japan with Japanese pianist, Mitsubishi Kikuchi and 1994 toured to Macau, China with Michael Carvin quintet.

In 2005 the celebrated pianist, Geri Allen joined forces with Mark Johnson, Darryl Hall, Dave McMurray and Antoine Roney for TimeLine group, touring Europe.
