Pedro Giraudo "Expansions" Big Band

Friday, February 23
10pm & Midnight $25 & $20 covers

Acclaimed composer and bandleader Pedro Giraudo returns to Zinc with his 17-piece big band,"Expansions," broadening the powerful emotional impact of his compositions, which have captivated listeners around the world with their passion and energy. With Argentine underpinnings and a hint of South American grooves, they're subtly suggestive of such composers as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, masterfully weaving together pre-composed and improvised elements, lavish melodies over complex rhythms. The band won top honors two years in succession in Latin Jazz Corner's "Best Of" awards, and was the winner "Best Jazz Album" in this years IMA POP music poll. In this appearance, they will preview some of the new work that are the centerpieces of their upcoming new CD (their 5th).

"The rich eloquence of Giraudo's gorgeous artistic expression flows through the music with an undeniable grace. . .through the colors of Giraudo’s finely tuned compositions." —Chip Boaz, Latin Jazz Corner

“An opulent listening experience of modern orchestral jazz, brimming with passionate improvisations, contrapuntal melodies, and plush harmonies." —John Murph, Downbeat Magazine

"The group is full of compelling soloists. If Mingus were still around, he’d love this group.” — Paul Blair, Hot House
