“While his chops are evident and likely to attract a certain segment of listeners who simply want fireworks, Vega has so much more to offer. He can go from cool to hot in the blink of an eye and he cooks on a low-volume flame as few others can.” —All About Jazz

Acclaimed jazz pianist Donald Vega brings his trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Friday, October 18. She’s supported by bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Billy Drummond.

Donald Vega has been hailed as “the next piano voice” in jazz by the acclaimed Ron Carter! With competitive winnings including a 1st place ranking at the Philips Jazz Piano Competition and over five sold-out shows this year, Vega has proven himself as one of the premier jazz pianists of our time.

Donald Vega was trained classically in piano in his native Nicaragua. He emigrated to the United States at age 14 and found a musical home with the Colburn School of Performing Arts (CSPA). He began his studies there in classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louis Lepley. Vega began learning the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and continued at CSPA with Jeffrey Lavner, then later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He went on to graduate from Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great, Kenny Barron. Vega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world-renowned bassist Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio. Mr. Vega also sits on the board of BackCountry Jazz, a non-profit organization that provides music education programs and performances to underprivileged youth.

Showtimes are at 7:30 PM and 9:00 pm. Tickets: $25 advance / $30 day of show. For more info call (212) 477-9462 or visit http://zincjazzcom.
